Nigeria

In Nigeria, one local organisation is changing how the whole country reports emergencies

When LEGASI identified a simple flaw making it harder for Nigerians to report threats and get help, they didn't just flag it, they fought to fix it - all the way to the Federal Senate.

When violence strikes or a crisis unfolds, getting help quickly can mean the difference between life and death. But for years, the system for reporting emergencies across Nigeria has been bewilderingly complex, a tangle of 11-digit phone numbers spread across multiple government agencies, with no single number a frightened person could reliably call. In a country already grappling with widespread criminality and acts of terror, this wasn't just a bureaucratic inconvenience. It was risking lives.

LEGASI - the Ladies Empowerment Goals and Support Initiative - saw the problem clearly and decided to act. They launched a campaign calling for the revival of Nigeria's 112 emergency hotline: one number for everyone, for every kind of emergency. To build the support needed to make it happen, they held high-level consultations in Kaduna and Plateau states and secured meetings with representatives of the Chief of Air Staff and Chief of Army Staff. A community organisation, going directly to the people with the power to change the system - and making the case plainly and persistently.

The results are real and growing. In September 2025, Kaduna's state government reactivated the 112 service for medical emergencies, a significant win that means health crises can now be reported quickly and simply across the state. At the Federal level, the Nigerian Senate has moved towards establishing 112 as a toll-free national number covering all emergencies, including security threats. In December 2025, a bill to do exactly that passed its second reading in the Senate.

It is not yet law. But it is on its way because a local organisation in Kaduna refused to accept that the system couldn't change, and kept pushing until it did.
